Adopt a Tree!

Submitted by Beth K on

Hello Everybody!

My name is Ms. Ashlee and I am a teacher from the McCall Outdoor Science School (MOSS). Back in September, I visited some classes here locally and helped students adopt a tree in their school yard. I would love to continue this activity at home! This activity is great for Kindergarten and 1st grade students.

Materials: Paper (blank), Pencil, Coloring materials (crayons, colored pencils, markers), Clipboard or something hard to write on, Camera/Phone

We will focus on Observations, Tree Parts and Getting Outside

Click here to view a video of me explaining the activity

Steps:

  1. Go outside and pick a tree in your yard or neighborhood
    1. Pick a tree that is really interesting
    2. Can be any size, shape, or species
    3. Make sure it is accessible (want to be able to touch their tree)
    4. Try and pick a spot you can visit every week!
  2. Name your tree (if you want).
  3. Take a picture by the tree! Can be up close, far away, or both!
  4. Put your name and the date on the top corner of your blank journal page.
  5. Draw your tree! Draw every part of the tree that you can. Draw what you see on the ground below, anything around their tree, or any critters you see in the tree.
  6. Label as many tree parts as you know (roots, leaves/needles, trunk, bark, can you think of any others?).

If you want to, you can come back to your tree once a week and draw or write what you notice about your tree. Has it changed? Do you notice anything new that you didn’t observe before?

I hope you enjoy getting outside! The spring time is perfect for observing changes in the environment and our trees.
